The award-winning educational program MiniChess was developed by Marisa van der Merwe and is now being implemented in 8 countries. She won the Shoprite-Checkers Women of the Year award (Education) in 2012, is an Ashoka Fellow and is a Trustee of The Entrust Foundation (a non-profit community-empowerment organization).

MiniChess has been invited to Women in the World (New York 2013) and various international conferences: ACEI (Association For Childhood Education International) in Vancouver 2014, WISE (World Innovation Summit on Education) in Qatar 2014, Visual Literacy Inter-disciplinary Conference in Lisbon 2015, Kasparov Chess Foundation Global Summit in St Louis USA 2015 and London Chess and Education Conferences (2013, 2014 and 2015) as well as various local Education-conferences and forums in SA. Marisa van der Merwe was the first South African to play chess against ex-world chess champion Grandmaster Garry Kasparov.

The MiniChess Program supports:
1) Early Childhood Education (defining the future) – not only of the individual and community, but the Countrys knowledge-capital and therefore its place in the 21st Century. Starting early and smart is the only way to harness the most powerful energy in the world: human talent.
2) In-Community collaboration and empowerment-initiatives can mobilize a country of social entrepreneurs – rooted in sustainable leadership towards an enduring, effective and compelling force for the common good.
3) Change-makers in Education must invest successfully in pattern-breaking, powerful ideas and the people behind them.

MiniChess in South Africa 60,000+ children and 1500+ trained teachers. MiniChess also serves 8 countries in Africa as well as 2 countries in Central Asia. Pilot programs in USA and Australia.
