Education-innovation: The award-winning MiniChess & MindCo programs, were developed by Marisa van der Merwe in South Africa and is now being implemented in 9 countries as well as Online over-borders. She won the Shoprite-Checkers Women of the Year award (Category Education) in 2012, is a recognised international-speaker, an Ashoka Fellow and is a Trustee of The Entrust Foundation (a non-profit PBO, championing community-empowerment in disadvantaged communities). The play-based engagement moves over barriers of age, gender, culture, language and physical abilities – is interactive, joyful, meaningful and social, while developing resilience, creativity, thinking/reflection, cooperation and emotional skills. Global: MiniChess was show-cased at the Women in the World Summit (New York 2013) and various international conferences: ACEI (Association For Childhood Education International) in Vancouver 2014, WISE (World Innovation Summit on Education) in Qatar (2014), Visual Literacy Inter-disciplinary Conference in Lisbon (2015), Kasparov Chess Foundation Global Summit in St Louis USA (2015), London Chess and Education Conferences (2013, 2014 and 2015), ECD-Summit in the Kyrgyz Republic(2017)as well as various local Education-platforms in SA & African countries. Marisa van der Merwe was the first South African to play against ex-world chess-champion Grandmaster Garry Kasparov.
